Johnny Clegg Reveals His Human Side
by Philip Scott
Multi-award winning and internationally acclaimed South African musician, Johnny Clegg, is set to release his highly anticipated new album, Human. The follow-up to 2007s One Life is a mix between socio-political, cultural, and personal songs.
As one would come to expect with Cleggs music, this album presents a range of styles from rock & pop, to celtic, to traditional African dance music. Clegg, who is currently celebrating his 30th anniversary as a professional musician, has spent his career fusing rock & pop music with traditional African music, the reason for which he received the nickname Le Zoulou Blanc (White Zulu) from the people of France, a country in which he has sold several million records.
Human was recorded at ICP Studios in Brussels. Normally taking on the role of producer himself, Clegg this time decided to employ the production skills of Nicolas Fiszman, a bassist from Brussels with whom Clegg worked on Julukas reunion album, Crocodile Love (1996). Also featured on the record is arguably South Africas best blues guitarist, Dan Patlansky, as well as the two-time Grammy Award winning group, Soweto Gospel Choir. The album ends off with a traditional Bhaca dancing song, called Magumede, a song to which Clegg used to dance when he was just 16 years old.
