Migrating from one country to another is a big move, but the actual relocation of goods is made easier by the packing being done for you. Although most of us wish and hope that well never have to pack up and move again, there are often occasions when we need to: We buy a house, we need to move out of the rental that were in, we relocate to another city or suburb, for example.
If youre going to be moving yourself or if youre trying to do the move more economically, you may decide to pack up all your belongings yourself. Here are some tips to help you pack the perfect removal boxor at least to help make the move a little easier and to help you to get your things to your new home a little more safely.
Use proper removal boxes. It will make your task easier, your items will be safer, and your move will be completed more quickly.
Plan what to put in each removal box.
Use butchers paper newspaper may leave ink marks.
Cross tape the bottom and top of the moving box with professional moving tape. Theres no need to fold the box flaps init just ruins the box.
Mark the contents of the box, and the room to which its going, clearly on the tape. For example, glassware dining room.
Protecting your goods
Protect your goods by layering the contents in the following way:
Place a good layer of screwed-up paper (we call this crush) across the bottom of the box and up the sides as high as the first row of items.
Layer items wrapped in paper between layers of crushed paper, working up from the heavier items at the bottom, to the lighter, finer items on the top.
Finish flush to the top of the box with a final layer of crushed paper. All items should fit tightly to ensure there is no movement.
If there is room remaining in the box, place linen or towels on top of the plates before sealing the box.
Dont overload or overflow removal boxes.
Dont pack large boxes with books or heavy items as they become too heavy to move safely. If you have to put heavier items into a tea chest box, limit the heavy stuff to no more than half way and fill up with Tupperware, for example.
If youre packing crockery
If you are packing crockery, dont be tempted to lay plates flat in a moving box and risk breakage. Rather, wrap each plate individually and then bind them together tightly with butchers paper. Put no more than four plates together at a time for side plates.
Place a stack of butchers paper on the table. The sheets should be large enough to accommodate the plates you need to pack.
Place the first plate in the centre of the top sheet and fold one corner of the sheet over the place until its completely covered.
Take the next plate and place it on top of the first plate. Wrap the remaining three corners of the butchers paper over the second, third and fourth plates respectively.
Secure the paper with packing tape.
For dinner plates its best to wrap them individually.
Place plates in the box on their side or vertically. Plates should never be packed flat. If the box encounters any kind of force, plates on their edge can sustain a lot more pressure.
If you chose to use bubble wrap, fold in the edges of the bubble wrap so plates are covered and protected. Place another layer of crushed paper on top of this layer of wrapped items and up the sides of the box.
Remember, if it can fit in a box, put it in a box! This includes items like a mini hi-fi, a fancy hat or a lamp shade. This will protect your items, and make packing the removal truck far easier and quicker.
