Prima Donna Cows
Scientist say Organic milk is healthier. Jo Revill, health editor Sunday August 27, The Observer a group of scientists is putting pressure on the Governments food watchdog to state that Organic milk is healthier than the conventional type, because of its high content of vitamins and essential fatty acids.
Organic milk is not only free of antibiotics, but is also much richer in essential fatty acids such as omega 3, which is helpful in brain development for children. Dairy cows are milked less intensively and fed more forage than conventional herds. Organic dairy cows are not given antibiotics and hormones to increase milk yield and fight infections. Organic milk is higher in levels of vitamin E, omega 3 essential fatty acids and antioxidants.
Magnesium For Asthma
A new American study published in the Journal of Asthma indicates that daily magnesium supplements have a beneficial outcome for asthmatics. Fifty five mild to moderate asthma sufferers between the ages of 21 and 55 were randomly assigned to receive either a daily dose of 340mg of magnesium or a placebo for a period of 6 months. A 6% improvement in lung function was observed among the magnesium group and none in the placebo group. The researchers concluded that the mineral may influence cell membrane properties, thereby improving the ability of lungs to expand.
Do Labels Lie?
Learn to understand food labels so that you can pick foods that help, rather than hinder, your fitness and health goals. The following rules of thumb are:
1) Word organic has marketing superpowers and is split under 3 categories. To be considered organic, products must contain at least 95% organically produced ingredients; made with organic brand must contain 70% organic ingredients and then we have 100% organic.
2) Word light could mean anything light in colour, light in fat, salt or kilojoules. It must specify exactly how light it is.
3) Word all natural should not be confused with organic. This could mean anything and only refers to how a specific food was processed or if meat how it was raised.
4) Word wholesome has nothing to do with nutritional value at all and could mean anything. It does not indicate free from contaminants.
